Rules & Regs

This page was inspired by THIS PAGE.  Thank you, Ms. Lavars!

“Internet safety is of utmost importance when blogging. Through blogging, you can learn how to be cyber safe in an authentic  setting with a real audience. This means when you are blogging at school you can be cyber safe in a supervised setting.”

When you POST anything on the Internet, it is instantly visible all over the world.  Your presence online, including in posts, comments, or photos, leaves a virtual and PERMANENT footprint which can always be traced back to the owner — YOU!  Make sure you think carefully about what you post on the Internet, and always follow these rules:

BE SAFE:

  • Do not use your last name.  Remind your parents not to use their last names either.
  • Don’t be specific when writing about yourself. eg. Say: “I play basketball with a local team” rather than “I play for the Toronto Raptors”.
  • Never give anyone your house address, email address, or phone number.
  • Do not post photos of others without their explicit permission.  If you are unsure, better not post.

BE RESPECTFUL

  • Don’t say anything that might be offensive to someone else.  Remember your manners.
  • Be considerate of others. When commenting, show that you have read what was written rather than just saying “great job”.  Compliment the author on something specific, or perhaps ask a question.
  • Be open to other people’s ideas.  You may not agree with someone’s point of view, just as others won’t agree with yours.
  • Do not post work or media that do not belong to you.  Following copyright rules is very important.  When in doubt, check with a teacher.

BE LITERATE

  • When commenting, please write in the form of a letter.  Begin with “Dear Becky” or “Dear Mrs. Greenhow’s class,” and conclude in a friendly way.
  • You know about good grammar, spelling and punctuation. Apply those skills when blogging, and ALWAYS proof read.  Your constributions will not be published if your writing is not the best it can be.
  • No texting language or short cuts.
  • You are sharing your learning with the world. Present yourself and our school in the best possible light.

Thank you, and we hope you have fun learning along with us!
